The Westlake Aktion Club volunteered at the Emily's Rainbow Run for Pediatric Cancer Research at Rainbow Babies Hospital on Sunday, April 29. 2012.

This was the Fourth Emily's Run which is named for Emily Lewis a young girl who was stricken with pediatric cancer. Emily walked the race the first year but passed away before the second years run.

The Aktion Club set up food and water and distributed it to the runners and walkers after the race. They also helped with the post race clean up.

Aktion Club of Richland County

The month of March was a busy one for the Aktion Club of Richland County. Three members voluntered at the annual Kiwanis Pancake day, putting in 6 hours of service while helping our local Kiwanis Club.

During our Group meeting for the month, we had our local Kiwanis President speak to our group. He is an employee of the local Health Department and spoke to the group about the importance of handwashing and how to properly perform the task. We had 49 members and 8 advisors in attendance for this meeting!

On March 23rd, one of our members and one advisor worked the table at the Annual Bringing the Elements together at the Richland Mall. During this event, individuals served by the county board perform and have on display their different talents and abilities for the public.

April will be another busy month as we already have three big events planned that we will be volunteering at!

AKTION CLUB OF SUMMIT COUNTY:

The AKTION Club of Summit County met on Thursday February 11, 2012 with about twenty folks in attendance. The club as honored to host a special guest, Laura Brelin, President, of the Downtown Kiwanis Club. Afterwards, AKTION Club President, John Belles, told Laura we had something that belonged to her. He then presented her with the Downtown Kiwanis Club Gavel. John also presented her an AKTION Club tee shirt and a cap. When Laura tried to take the Gavel and struggle ensued, but Laura won.

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. The AKTION Club will take part in a kickoff event on March 1st at the Ohio Statehouse Atrium in Columbus from 10:00 am to noon. Three members of the AKTION Club will share their unique experiences, underscoring the 2012 Awareness Month theme "Our Community is Better Together." Ohio's celebration of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month raises public awareness of the many abilities that people with disabilities have, and encourages communities to welcome individuals' differences, as well as their similarities. The Statehouse Kickoff event will focus on the many opportunities emerging in this spirit throughout the state.

The Club voted to take part in the Akron St. Patrick’s parade on March 10th. Members will gather at Canal Place at 10 A.M. to decorate the van. The theme for this year is "Be Happy, Be Irish Today". Our participation in the parade will bring awareness to the community about our club and the Summit County DD Board.

The Club also voted to help with the Rotary Special Needs Camp Cleanup day [date and time to be determined] and with the Bath Richfield Pancake Day on April 15th.

AKTION Clubs of Ohio have challenged each AKTION Club to raise $240 to support the ELIMINATE project to eliminate mother/neo-natal tetanus, which is one of the leading causes of death for new mothers and infants in the third world. The Summit County AKTION Club voted to conduct a Flower Power sale in the fall. The Club challenged the Downtown Kiwanis and the Bath Richfield Clubs to match our funds for this important International Kiwanis project.
